“You never know” has always been one of my favorite sayings, and it’s more true today than ever before. It’s the core of my philosophy. Mike Tyson once said, "Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth." Some things you just can’t anticipate, and you must roll with the punches. With the right attitude, you can make the best of unexpected situations.
Involuntary Commitment
Sometimes we must make the best of things. I call this “involuntary commitment.” Coaching great Lou Holtz once told a story: A fire in a small town was burning out of control, too hot for the firemen to get close. Seeing the buildings going up in flames, the richest man in town offered $100,000 to anyone who could put out the fire. Suddenly, a tiny pumper engine came barreling down the street, siren blaring, straight into the flaming jaws of the fire! In less than an hour, the flames are down and a lone firefighter came out from among the smoldering ashes.
The rich man came forward, shook the fireman’s hand and gave him the check for $100,000. “What will you do with the money,” he asked.
“Well,” said the fireman, “First I’m gonna get the brakes fixed on my truck!”
Finding Opportunity in Adversity
When I say, “you never know,” I’m talking about finding opportunity when things look grim. As my good friend Joe Plumeri often reminds me, the worst thing that you believe can happen turns out to be the best thing that could happen! Unfortunately, we usually see this in hindsight.
Early on in my career, I kept finding myself in situations that seemed difficult, that I wanted to get out of. However, with the encouragement of my mom and others, I hung in there until I could find the good in each situation, or found a way to step up instead of stepping out. My mother used to tell me, “never run from, always run to.” I always advise people that if you don’t know what to do, it’s not time to make a change. You never know what will come!
Trust Your Instincts
Sometimes it makes sense to go with a hunch. Your subconscious mind puts things together in ways your conscious mind never could. Always give everyone the red-carpet treatment – creating partnerships and working deals with people I never expected to even meet has been key to my success.
