A few years ago, I sat down and spoke with former NFL running back and ESPN analyst Merril Hoge to discuss his latest book Brainwashed; which I highly recommend you check out if you want to know whether you should allow your kid to play football.
Within our interview, Merril told a story about something Hall of Fame head coach Chuck Noll taught him early on in his career. For the entirety of his playing career before that moment, he thought he always did everything he could for his team. But Coach Noll challenged him to do more, and to be uncommon.
Merril played 8 seasons in the NFL and is a longtime football analyst at ESPN. Without Coach Noll striving to get as much as he could out of him, who knows if Merril would become as successful as he's been.
Sometimes, it's easy to think you're doing everything you can. Life has its stressful moments, and it's easy to get caught up in those moments.
But in order to be successful, you need to find a way to stand out. You need to be uncommon in your effort.
What are you doing to differentiate yourself?
