10 Steps to Financial Success

So I was giving a speech the other day and a younger woman asked, “How can I become rich?”

Not an easy answer there and certainly not a short one (unless you want to read my blog daily), but I can understand why a younger person can be curious about how to make millions.

But, I gave her my best answer and came up with a list of some of things I think are important to help reach a high level of financial success:

1. Give a shit. Not just about some things, but everything.

People say don't sweat the small stuff, but I think you have to sweat everything for quite a while.

2. Be passionate about everything.

Even stuff you don't like, not just the things that are easy or convenient. Commitment isn't convenient.

3. Your level of curiosity has to be at a high level.

Be a 60 Minutes reporter trying to find out everything there is about what you are doing

4. Find the best people and follow what they’re doing.

This will help you have an understanding of where the bar is set in the area you want to have success.

5. Always think about how you can learn. Daily.

Be a student and understand that the world is your class room. It is full of all kinds of people that can teach you something.

6. Conduct a self-analysis on a regular basis.

Be honest with yourself. You can always improve and get better, but only if you accept that you have weaknesses and are willing to celebrate your strengths.

7. Don’t chase the money. Chase the things that make the money.

As the old saying goes: give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. The company you work for is willing to invest in your education. Take advantage of that.

8. Have faith and trust that if you do good and remain 100% committed, things will work out.

Always hustle. The hard work you put in now will give you the credibility and knowledge to be a key decision maker in the future.  Even if you don’t get what you want right now, you certainly might in the future.

9. Learn how to make $1.

Is $1 million the toughest? No- it’s your first dollar. If you know how to make $1, you will learn the value of that one dollar.

10. Do what you say.

Get back to people. Double-check everything. Follow-through. Make sure someone got everything they needed from you.

BONUS: Do as much as you can for as many people as you can as often as you can and expect nothing back!

Follow these steps and you will be on your way.
