Planning Your Route

Here is another adaptation from my first book, The Business Playbook. When I re-read the book recently, I realized that there are so many lessons in there that can be applied to the business world today. Its an essential tool for salespeople, sports marketing professionals and aspiring entrepreneurs in college.

This post focuses on the importance of having a plan and establishing it before you get started, one of the key first-steps towards success in business.

Here’s my plain and simple statement of the day: having a plan is the most essential ingredient to your success.

I’ll say it again: having a plan is the most essential ingredient to your success.

Many of us walk through life, trudging through the day-to-day grind without a strategy. Later, we wonder why so many of our dreams remain unfulfilled. I’m here to tell you that you need a single game plan that will help you become a champion in any field you choose.

When Jim Abbott asked how he pitched a no-hitter for the Yankees back in ’93, he said, “I just tried to stick to the plan I had going into the game.” As a man who built a major league pitching career despite being born with only one hand, Jim Abbott knew the importance of a plan.

Of course, you can live an unplanned life, being the ultimate free spirit and taking each moment as it comes. But, without a defined set of goals and a strategy for success, you are just going to find yourself running up and down the field without much hope of scoring any points.

I believe there are three kinds of people when it comes to success in life:

  1. The people who make things happen.
  2. The people who watch things happen.
  3. The people who stand by and say, “What happened?”

Always strive to make things happen. That’s where the fun is, and to get there, you’re going to need a plan and you’re going to need to prepare.
