Two Things I Learned on Tuesday from Michael Strahan

There are few people in New York sports history that have been as well-liked for their on-field AND off-field demeanor as much as Michael Strahan. The guy won a Super Bowl with the Giants and now is one of the biggest stars on TV with LIVE With Kelly and Michael, Good Morning America, and FOX NFL Sunday. Of course, just this past weekend, Michael was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the sport’s highest honor.

As I think about the positive influence Michael Strahan has had on people, I reflect on his induction speech:

My key takeaways:

  1. In life you have to have perseverance, discipline and commitment.

You have to be willing to work hard in situations where it doesn’t seem like you stand a chance. As you encounter those moments where you think you’ve run out of options you have to still compete and push forward. Others will take notice. Employers, coaches, teachers, parents- they all take note of how you act in any situation. Don’t give them a reason to ever doubt you.

  1. Live your life.

Life is about dreams. If you want something to come true, make it come true. Just like in football, you have to be willing to make sacrifices in the short-term for a greater benefit in the long-term. Everyone has the opportunity to get to where they want to be and it’s only a matter of the effort they make that will dictate what happens next.
