Motivation- how do you motivate someone to take action?
Incentive.
One night I went to bed and my wife says to me, “You just don’t know how hard it is each morning- to wake up Nicole (our daughter) and to have her get dressed, eat breakfast and get on her way to school.”
So, I went to my daughter’s room and told her, “I’m going to be waking you up tomorrow. Your mom says I can’t do it and that it’s too hard to get you up in the A.M.”
I offered Nicole $2 to get up when I wake her the first time, get dressed, go downstairs and eat breakfast by 8:10am.
Sure enough, after one wake-up yell, Nicole was ready and waiting to go, as requested.
“That’s the easiest two bucks I ever earned,” she said.
I responded, “Same here…your mom bet me five bucks I couldn’t get you ready on time, so that’s the easiest three bucks I’ve ever earned!”
There are too many people out there that think providing an incentive for a specific action won’t knock home the lesson that you’re trying to instill. I disagree. Sometimes it just takes that reward to make someone realize how important something can be.
