To all managers out there, I want to ask you a question: what is your biggest asset?
STOP
Many of you think your biggest asset is your inventory. It’s NOT!
It’s your people.
The people that work for you are a reflection of you and the overall management team in a company.
Are there people that have been misguided? You may have to look in the mirror because they are just reflecting your approach.
I have been managing people for a long time. There are always going to be weak links. The question is, what are you doing about it to get these folks on track towards being more productive?
Typically a lack of productivity is not for a lack of effort (for the most part), but more so the type of ancillary stuff you are putting up with and not putting a stop to. That’s the type of stuff that can slow a company down.
I ask you to think about how much money are these people costing you everyday with what they are NOT doing?
As a manager, you are only as good as your weakest link. I was speaking with Lou Holtz recently and he said, “How do you have good people? You fire those who aren’t."
