Watching the Yankees play the Orioles in the playoffs will always remind me of the magical season of 1996, when the Bombers beat Baltimore en route to winning their first World Series since 1978. Of course, that was also Derek Jeter’s rookie year. I can’t believe the Yanks have had the captain at short for 16 years; it seems like just yesterday that, as a rookie, Derek hit that ball into Jeffrey Maier’s glove, to help beat the O’s the first time. In honor of Derek, and the 25th anniversary of Steiner Sports, here’s my personal list of the Top 10 New York athletes of the past 25 years:
10. Patrick Ewing
9. Brian Leetch
6. Mike Piazza
5. Mark Messier
4. Eli Manning
Honorable mentions go to Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden of the beloved ‘86 Mets, and Martin Brodeur, who surely would have made the list if he didn’t play for a New Jersey team.
Who would make your list? Go at it in the comments section below!

I think David Wright should get at least an honorable mention here; a 1st round pick of the Mets, he became the face of the franchise throughout his career.
